Hello? Is it me your looking for? (Re-read in Lionel Richie Voice)

Farmers Market, Me, Mixed Media, Runningcarla

You guys!  I have abandoned my blog?  Why you ask???  I JUST DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME IN MY DAY!  Working a "real" job, plus trying to paint, AND exercise, AND RUN A BUSINESS all at the same time. It was to much. So overwhelming, so I just gave up.  Also, 2015 hasn't been so kind to me.  I started off having big plans for 2015, new website, more propanels, a laptop to easily write these darn blog posts!  All of that went down the tubes when I had knee surgery, my step-dad has been super sick, and did I mention the orthodontic office I work for moved to a new location?   The gallery in Bellingham that sold my art went out of business.  It truly has been one thing after another.  2015 has been draining and overwhelming this year!

So lets see, since it has been months....let me fill you in on what you missed. Lets go Month by month shall we?  First....in October, you missed Ally's Sweet Sixteen birthday! What a blast! The kids spent the day doing a scavenger hunt through town, photos in a dress up booth and an elegant dinner of spaghetti and Caesar salad.  The evening ended with a surprise visit from a limousine which proceeded to take them to The Big Scoop Ice Cream Parlor!

In November we headed on out to Carson City to see Dan's parents for Thanksgiving!  I finally got to meet Dan's brother for the first time! So fun! We had a great time catching up, and my favorite part was seeing a holiday show at the El Dorado Hotel in Reno.  The weather always seems so nice in Nevada, we may just have to move there.

Blog---6month1

My December picture should be about the holidays but instead I will show you a picture of my new dining room table!  Isn't it crazy!  It was such a BAD idea to start a project like this during the holidays, what was I thinking?  The table itself has layer after layer of acrylic paint.  I love how the chairs are different colors.  I honestly can't believe Dan has put up with it, ha! ha!  It truly is just temporary until we can afford a nice dining room table and chairs; have you priced those things lately? Wowza!

In January, we started the New Year off right when my son and his girlfriend came over to celebrate New Years Eve.  We spent the evening playing board games, so hilarious! These two are so so dang sweet.

Blog-6months3

February, right after the holidays, I ended up tearing my meniscus in my knee!  Bummer!  As most of you know, I love running, and this news was devastating.  I really wasn't prepared for this kind of news but decided to get it fixed right away so I could hit the pavement.  Dan and I have already signed up for several non-refundable half marathons this summer. (so keep your fingers crossed for a quick recovery.  So far things haven't gone so well)

March was inspiring!!!  I hade been laid up for a while, but my friend Dana suggested that I do a children's book! Thanks Dana for the awesome fun idea!  I have always wanted to make a children's book!  Here is a sampling below.  I thought I would start by doing a simple ABC animal book and see how that goes. Happy animals make me smile!!! I do have a great story that I would like to work on next!

For my April picture I wanted to share that my style seems to be changing once again, but I am just going with it.  I guess this is the ever changing artist in me. I feel like this past winter has been a mix of emotions. I have been frustrated with not being able to keep up and I really wish I had more time to dedicate to my art. I didn't get a chance to offer any classes this year, and still feel completely unorganized.  One positive thing about this winter is that I have had some time to really play with colors.  Like this:

(I think I am diggin' it! :)

As for May....lets talk about what is happening today and in the future.  Lets see.....I am getting ready to do my FIRST farmers market this weekend.  I am nervous and excited all at the same time!!!! I just put my art in THE MYSTICAL MERMAID store in FRIDAY HARBOR for all of you islanders looking for my work!  Go on in and take a peek!  Brian is a super nice guy, he can even show you the Venus Fly traps for sale in the back of the store! SO COOL!

Blog-6months6

In June I decided that I am dialing back the market this year and plan on doing more art festivals. I will be at The Anacortes Farmers Market on June 6th, July 25th and August 9th.  If you are looking for me this summer....you can find me here:

Thanks everyone for the continued support!  I cant believe it has been 5  years!!!  This little business of mine started off with a drug store canvas and some old craft paintings and has grown every year!!!  All of this is possible because of YOU!!!!  I am so grateful!

THANK YOU!

A Very Special Saturday.

Art Journaling, RunningcarlaComment

Had one of the best Saturdays ever.  You know, the kind where everything in the universe goes right and you think to yourself.....wow...I will never forget this day.  That is how I felt about Saturday June 21st.  Most of you know that I have been battling a tendonitis injury from last summers marathon training.  Finally was able to start running a few weeks ago.  I decided at the last minute to sign up for a half marathon because why not right?  Ha! Ha!  Dan and I did not train for it, we were totally not in shape to do it, but who cares, you only live once!

I signed us up for Berry Dairy Days in Burlington.  It is a flat scenic course on the levy that runs next to the Skagit river.  We did this race last year and swore we would never do it again.  The gravel road is full of large rocks and will begin hurting your feet around mile 8.  With that being said, I cannot believe that I am about to tell you that this was the most enjoyable half marathon that I have ever run.  No timers, no watch, no worrying about a PR....just Dan and I out on the road solving all of the worlds problems.  So fun.  I remember every mile, taking it all in and being so grateful that I was out on the road again.  I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, take that for granted.  This last year has been incredibly hard for me emotionally and physically.  So happy to be back at it again.

Dan has been so supportive though this whole thing.  He stopped running when I got hurt because he knew how hard it was for me. I really appreciated it.  I don't think I could bare watching him run all the time while I had to sit it out.  I was so happy to have him right there with me this weekend by my side. Love that guy!

saturday

We came in 10 minutes past our average since we went slow, but I am so glad we finished with no injuries!

After the race we walked over to The Train Wreck and had a beer and a breakfast burrito.  As Dan says "I don't always drink beer in the morning, but when I do, it is after I have run a half marathon"....ha! ha!

saturday1

I wish I could tell you that I came home and took a nap but the truth is, I had a little fitbit addiction episode.  I realized that it was 10:00 a.m. and I had already gone 25,000 steps. (the most I had ever gotten in a day....) That is a TON OF STEPS...so.....Why not see if I could do 40,000 in a day??? I walked.....and walked......and walked.....and then walked some more until I made it to 20 miles in a day!!!!  Yay ME!!!

saturday2

Now I can say that I have walked 40,000 steps in a day, wooohoooo! (Yes, I know there is something wrong with me...)  Dan threated to take my fitbit away again!

After my 20 mile day, I took a some time to rest and  colored in my art journal:

saturday3

I am grateful.  Grateful to have this smiling happy man in my life.....grateful I can get out of bed each day....grateful I can run again...

(please ignore laundry pile on the top of the couch....it got put away....eventually I think)

saturday4

What are you grateful for?

Happy Friday

Painting, Runningcarla

Yay, we all made it through another week!  I was able to finish up my "Fish" show paintings that I will share with you next week.  I did several other paintings done as well. It has been a struggle lately to get new work completed and still manage to work my part-time job.  I typically only have a day or two to paint every week, and to be honest, I am nervous for the summer shows!

I am still on track for beating Scott with the fitbit this week (see previous blog post), and I even earned my 20,000 steps in a day badge! Yay!

daisies

Two of my favorite things....daisies and running shoes.  So far so good with my leg, I ran a few more times and no problems!!!

Are you guys sitting down?  You won't believe what I am about to tell you!!!!

I painted a bubble tree this week.  I don't paint them very often....but they are my biggest seller and I feel like I should have them for the Friday Harbor and San Juan Island Art Festivals this summer!  Why don't I paint them very often you ask?  Well, for two reasons.... one, they take me forever, and second, I have painted a ton of them and they don't seem as special anymore.  So on that note, I am making the original bubble tree more of a rarity, and selling prints.

bubble-tree-flip-flopsYes, that is me in my pajamas!  Sometimes I am way more motivated if I just grab a cup of coffee and head right up to the studio.  I have this bad habit of getting side tracked and distracted!  I will start cleaning the house, then hang out on Instagram and before I know it, it is 2:00 p.m.

Today is cleaning the house day and getting ready for my mixed media class tomorrow!  YAY!!!   I am so excited to meet everyone and I know we are going to have a wonderful time!  Stay tuned for some photos next week!  We will hopefully getting two paintings a piece done tomorrow!

Hope you guys all have a wonderful weekend!  Fingers crossed for sunny days ahead!

Adventures with my fitbit...... :)

Art Journaling, Dieting, Me, Runningcarla1 Comment

It is confession time.  Sit down, hold on, here we go....  "Hi my name is Carla and I am addicted to my fitbit" (ok, I know I have already told you this before, but now we are on a whole new level) What is a fitbit you ask?  Oh, just this silly wristband pedometer  I wear that has totally TAKEN OVER MY LIFE!  This my second attempt with the fitbit, the first go-around, I had it taken away from me because I was obsessing and hurting myself.

Let us travel back a few months to the holidays.  Dan bought me a fitbit for a Christmas present.  I fell head over heels in love with it!  I programmed it into my IPhone and it tracks everything I do!  It monitors my steps, calories in and calories out, how well I am sleeping, and even how many pounds I need to lose!  It was love at first site!

fitbitI didn't care for the color at first, I am more of a hot pink girl, but it grew on me and now I love that fact that it blends in with most of my outfits!  So anyways, lets get back to why I had my fitbit taken away the first time.  If you remember a while back, I was injured training for a marathon last summer and was not suppose to be on my feet very much.  It was a tendonitis injury so the more repetition the worse it would get.  Needless to say, as soon as I received my new Christmas present, off I went.  I was walking 5 miles a day, tracking calories and lost 6 pounds pretty quickly.....all was going well...until....OUCH!!!! My leg started flaring up again.  Dan then proceeded to take my gift away and hide it in the closet until I became injury free!

It has now been a few months and he told me I am allowed to try it again, as long as I don't obsess about it.  (which I still do, muahahahahaha!) One of my favorite things about this pedometer that you can become "fitbit friends" with someone and track their steps too!  For example, my friend Scott, who thinks is super awesome....(which he isn't by the way) makes fun of me when he notices I haven't walked very much on a certain day.  He is one of those guys who is on his feet all day (pretending to work) so he easily gets his 10,000 steps in....and then some.  My goal is to kick his booty all the way to China!  This week is THE WEEK I think I can actually WIN! I am already ahead of him!  YAY ME!

fitbit6

I haven't been doing well at tracking calories...due to the sheer fact that I am lazy; AND............. I do not want to be held accountable for the potato salad that I just shoved into my mouth.  Mmmm.....burp, that was delish......

The fitbit makes exercise fun and has gotten my big old booty off the couch and back exercising again.  If you don't have one, I really encourage you to go out and purchase one.  They have many different makes and models; prices vary depending on what you are looking for.  If you are a game player or enjoy little challenges like me, this gadget it for you!  I happen to have the flex, which is the wristband.  I would be cautious when purchasing a fitbit "One," I have seen these out on the road or trails when they have fallen off while running.

Here are a couple shots of my morning walk (these morning walks are my secret enemy attacks against Scott...he is going down this week for sure!).....I sure do love where I live.  Thank you Anacortes for being so hip and beautiful.....

fitbit2fitbit4fitbitbikefitbit3As you can see, I live in one of the coolest places in the world!!  So grateful that I live here!!!  Well, I am off to get more steps in before Scott catches up with me!  Oh and did I mention????  I am back running again....trying not to over-do it but I did run this the other day:

5milesHappy Tuesday!

Ragnar Relay 2013

Runningcarla

Well, Dan and I once again decided to another crazy 200 mile relay race.  Ragnar Relay Northwest Passage 2013!  Sometimes I wonder why we do this to ourselves.  Oh ya, thats right......because it is so FANTASTICALLY FUN!!!!!  Nothing better than hanging out in a van with 6 smelly runners (x2) for 34 hours who are delirious from running and haven't slept.  NOW THAT IS WHAT I LIKE CALLING "A GOOD TIME!"

Most of our team was the same as last year, with a few new people added in.  We had team members from Colorado and Utah....and those of us who live right down the road.  So many fun memories from the past weekend, I don't even know where to begin.  From me literally peeing in my pants to my friends in Van 2 getting stuck across the border in Canada by accident, we all had so much fun!  My favorite part about this year is the fact that we turned our run into a fundraiser.  We raised over $2,000 to support children with cancer! Our team placed 2nd overall!  This really hit home for me.  My best friend had cancer all though middle school.  It was so hard to watch her go through it all: the chemo, being sick, missing school functions....I could go on and on.

Dan also ran into a old family friend at the finish line, what a bonus!!!!

I LOVE MY RAGNAR TEAM!

Here a few fun highlights:

Van 1!

Dan's "Honey Bucket" Blue socks!!!!

A blurry picture of Dan kickin' booty....Ragnar Tutu Style!!!

Oh ya baby!!!! Halfway though my first leg!

Some of the Van 2 peeps, a little wacky from no sleep!

Last exchange for my 3rd leg!!! Almost done!

My friend Janeen and I in the after race beer garden. We did it!

Erin and Rochie....our Colorado peeps.

Dan and his friend Mark...who he hasn't seen in a LONG time!

YES!!!! Another Ragnar crushed!!!! :)

***Dan and I keep sayin' we aren't going to do this next year......but who knows....we always have so much fun....maybe we will!

Blogging Loser.

PaintingcarlaComment

Talked to my dad yesterday, he pretty much called me a blogging loser. :)  Guess he is right, haven't been on here in a month!!!  Time has just flown by!  The month of June was totally crazy.  Came home from vacation and hit the ground running!  Why so busy you ask???  Here is just a  quick list of what went down last month: Orion's birthday, Dan's birthday, Father's Day, Dan's parents came to visit, Ally's moving up ceremony, Orion's moving up ceremony, Berry Dairy Days half marathon, day trip to Friday Harbor, Ally gets sick, Farmers Markets on Saturdays, commissioned paintings, AND training for my first marathon.  PHEW!!!! NOW THAT WAS THE CRAZIEST MONTH I HAVE EVER HAD!!!!  Soooo glad we are into July, and things will settle down a bit.  (well kinda).

D and I have a few running events coming up.  The Ragnar Relay Race is next weekend.  So excited!  We did this race last year and had a BLAST!!!! Can't wait to hook up with the team again this year.  This is a 200 mile relay race from Blaine Washington down the bottom of Whidbey Island.  We also are running in the Anacortes Art Dash 1/2 marathon this year.  The main reason for running this race is for the AWESOME shirt that has the word "art" on it.  Ha! Ha!

Here are a few pictures I gathered up from the last couple of weeks.  The last few are from the 4th of July.  We headed to Seafarers Memorial Park to see one of our favorite bands CHERRY CHERRY!!!!  Neil Diamond Tribute Band??? YES PLEASE!

Sold one of my favorite paintings last month!! Loved this one!

Ok, got a little carried away with polka dots, they just make me smile!!!

Ally heads to high school next year!!!! Where does the time go???

4th of July Parade in old town Anacortes!  The longest parade in the world. :)

Cherry Cherry!!!! "Sweet Caroline!"

He gave me a scarf!!!  He gave me a scarf!!!!  Wooohhhooooo!

Happy Monday everyone, and here's to a better blogging month in July!!!!

THE COLOR RUN!

Runningcarla1 Comment

Oooooh ya baby!!  Finally was able to participate in the "Color Run" this year!!! I missed it by a week last year and couldn't wait for it's return to SEATTLE!   Yahoooooo!!!!  WHAT A BLAST it was!   I even convinced Dan (not sure how) to join me!  If you are not familiar with the color run....it is basically a 5k fun run (they don't even time you)....everyone at the start line is clean and white and as you run the streets people "dust" you with color along the way!  It is the happiest 5k on the planet!  :)

To avoid all the crowds, we parked off site and rode the monorail to the Seattle Center.

Boom Chicka Bow Wow.........

FREE STARBUCKS after the race? HECK YES I AM HAPPY!!!!!!

Our post race color bomb photo!!!!

Cleaned up after the race and treated ourselves to the largest cream puff in the world at the Pike Place Market! :)

Two thumbs up for an awesome day!

The Biggest Loser Challenge!

Art Journaling, DietingcarlaComment

Well, if you are fortunate enough to know Dan and I, you will know just how competitive we are with each other!!!! Ha! Ha!  I think that is one of the things I love the most about him.  In all honesty, we truly make such a GREAT TEAM!  We are very supportive, and motivate each other.  Every year we do the same old thing.  Lose weight, and then comes the dreaded holidays where we PACK IT ON!  Cookies, cakes, dinner parties, drinks, egg-nog lattes, and so on.....

We decided this January to do a Biggest Loser Challenge, and it has been SO FUN!  Every Friday we weigh-in, and have been going by "percentage of weight lost".....sometimes I win that week, and sometimes he does.  Whoever loses for the week has to pay $20.00 into the "pot".  (Shhhhh......but I think Dan has paid-in way more than I have, hee! hee!)  Whoever wins on May 1st gets to decide on how we are going to use that money on our secret family vacation!!!!  YEAH!  So it truly is a win-win for everybody.

I always forget how time consuming it is to find the time to exercise everyday.  Sounds silly huh?  It seems like between going to work at my "real job", painting, taking care of the kiddies, and cooking......there really isn't a lot of time in the day.  I have been making sure to take an hour to work-out 6 days a week, and that folks, TAKES TIME!!!!  6 days a week you ask????  Oh ya baby, this girl is going to win!

My new secret weapon that I am going to use next is.......  my new "Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred" DVD!!!!  This is going to make me WIN THIS CHALLENGE FOR SURE!  This is a 20 minute HELL work-out. Excuse my French, but this BABY IS HARD!  I totally thought I was in shape....I have been running 4-5 miles a day, but this work-out is a KILLER.  It basically is a circuit training quick video that combines weights, cardio and abs.  I have done it twice now, and can barely type this blog post.  I AM SO SORE!

I am down to my last 5 pounds, let's see if I can SHRED it OFF!!!!!  All in all, this challenge has been so great for Dan and I.  We are having fun, eating clean and healthy, and saving some cash!!!!  Speaking of clean eating.  I have banned myself from watching anymore food documentaries!  It is disgusting what the government does to our food.  I now run around preaching to everyone to eat organic, no processed, no GMO foods.  I am starting to sound like my uncle Petey.  Who is uncle Petey??  Well, he use to be my uncle, then people got divorced, and blah, blah, blah.....but still feels like my uncle.....and long story short, he is always posting horrible things on what we should and shouldn't eat on Facebook.

I really hope we make it to our goal weight.  We are both stuck at a plateau right now, and it is frustrating.  Working so hard all week, and the scale refused to move.  I keep thinking in my head, WE CAN DO THIS! WE CAN DO THIS!  I posted some pictures below of our challenge.....Dan doesn't know I posted his weight....but he never reads my blog posts, so shhhhhh.....don't tell!  I don't care if the whole world knows how fat or skinny I am, I think people shouldn't care about telling their weight at all.  Large or small, we are who we are, so who cares anyways!.....I also added a couple of sketches from my watercolor journal.

Wish us luck....two more months to go!

Here is our weigh-in chalkboard, did you notice this week? Nothing is moving.

Where we started. Ha! Ha!

Yeah!!!! A Three, a three!!!! Back down into the 130's! PHEW!!!!

A picture of my secret weapon.....muahahahahaha!

Oooooooo ya baby!!!!! Feeling good, and gonna get BUFF!!!!!! :) Bring it on SEATON!

Happy Saturday!!!!

Meet Maddie and Olive……..

Commissions, PaintingcarlaComment

Hey guys.....it's me AGAIN!!!  Two posts in a week?  What?  What?  Ooooo ya baby, back in the groove.  Studio is clean, and I feel like I am getting back on track.  Haven't had to much time to paint, but I can't wait to get started on a few pieces that have been mulling around in my head.

Here are the latest commissioned pieces I have been working on.  These guys were so fun to paint!  Meet Olive, the sassy queen kitty.  Sounds like she is full of herself so I painted her on a pedestal, wearing a crown of course!!!!!  I struggled with Maddie the dog, quite a bit, and painted her over twice!  Mad's signature move is the cross-legged lay down position, which was "oh so" hard for me.  I do like how she turned out in the end!  Judy, the pet's owner picked the back ground colors of coral and turquoise.  These paintings will be hung in her newly remodeled studio!!!!!  Hurray!  I hope she sends me a picture once they are hung!  For now, they are all boxed up and headed out to the post office today!!!

So cute and colorful!!!!  Hey speaking of colorful, Dan and I signed up for the Color Run on May 12th in Seattle......so excited!!!!!  Really wanted to do this last year but missed it!!!!  Come on out and run with us!

Happy Thursday!

Ragnar Relay – Northwest Passage

RunningcarlaComment

Last weekend Dan and I participated in the Northwest Passage Ragnar Relay Race.  It was a 12 person, 200 mile relay that started in Blaine Washington, traveled south and ended in Langley, on Whidbey Island.  What a BLAST!  We were both pretty nervous for the race due to the fact that our training went right out the door when we went to Belize.  We did no type of training 3 weeks before the big event! AGH!  I highly DO NOT RECOMMEND preparing for a race this way, ha! ha!  I was really excited to be able to run in something like this.  I have done some half marathons, but I have never had to worry about someone waiting for me on the other end of race.  Another big concern I had was that it was in three legs, we would be up and awake for 33 hours.....taking turns. It sounded like our whole team "Chafing and On Fire" was pretty nervous before we started.  We all seemed to be second guessing ourselves, and wondering if we could actually pull it off.  Once the race began, we all settled down, and what a party we had!  I have never in my life had so much fun goofing off with people.  When you are piled in a car for hours at at time (and with no sleep) things just start getting goofy.  We were all making jokes about Body Glide, making fun of Dan (the only male runner), and laughing the whole way.  I only knew one other person on our team besides Dan, and I felt like we were all best friends at the end!  This race was amazing, challenging, and something I will never forget!  Dan was totally shocking pulling in 8 minute miles and powering over mountain hills.  I had no idea he could run like that! (I don't think he did had any idea either!)

The month of July has gone by in a flash.  Between the trip to Belize, and the relay race, I haven't had much time for art.  We have been to a few markets, but need to get back on track.  I am so excited to get back in the studio and back to creating!  Art is something that is such a big part of me.  I always feel like something is missing when I cannot spend some time in the studio.  There are some wonderful ideas that our roaming around in my head, inspired from my vacation.  Stay tuned!  For now, check out these crazy pictures of our race.  Dan and I have been smiling ever since we have been home. We just keep going over the memories......... My friend Clark described it the best: "Welcome to the bizarre world of running."

Run for the Honey Wagon!

RunningcarlaComment

Well, Dan and I survived the half marathon yesterday up in Nooksack, WA.  We decided after the holidays that we better be losing some weight and getting back into shape. We had both gained way to many pounds munching on Christmas cookies dipped in eggnog latte's.  Last month I signed us up for a 1/2 to get us moving again.  The whole point of signing up was to lose some weight, and THAT is EXACTLY what happened.

We started off walking a mile here, and there......I started to do some ZUMBA on the xbox, and we both started running and walking on the treadmill during the week.  Dan has lost 11 pounds, and I have lost 13!  YAHOOOO for EXERCISE!  He had never done a half marathon before, so we thought we would give it a shot.

The run itself was perfect for us....really, really, really flat.  With the one little tiny hill that was by a train track.  We are not "true runners", but I felt we did a great job.  We held a slow jog pace and walked only a few times. We maintained a 12 minute mile (super slow I know, but we had only been training for a month, so I felt we did AWESOME)  The wind was wicked yesterday, and blew from the south.  The course winded us through many cow farms, and pastures......needless to say, I may never smell again....that cow pie odor is still in my nostrils!  The Honey Wagon was put on by the Greater Bellingham Running Club.  This is the second race that I have participated in that they have organized.  They sure do a GREAT job!  Always friendly, professional, and it is very organized group.  The part I LOVE THE MOST, is that their races are priced very reasonable.  Lots of refreshments for the runners after the race......and our shirts were top quality.

OUR GOAL FOR THE RACE? To finish it and enjoy a  beer and a burger at Boundry Bay Brewery in Bellingham, it was sooooooooooo GOOD!

D is taking a little rest before the start.

Bleck....why did we have to get up soooooooo early.

Yahooo for finishing the race, and our post race brews!  Here is a picture of me with my super-hero good luck charm that went with us on our adventure!

Sooooo? What are we going to do now that it is over?  We just can't decide between the Everett half or the Whidbey Island half......they are both in April, we will keep you posted.

Sincerely,

Honey Wagon Heros!
