A Summer Update

Art Journaling, Family, Me, TravelcarlaComment

Wowza!  It has been weeks without blogging!  I have taken a couple of weeks off to spend time with family and friends and now trying to get back on track.  Now, where do I start? Hmmmm....lets see. Dan, Ally and I flew back to Ohio for the 4th of July. Who knew it would be so humid?  Ha! Ha! 85 degrees, and 80% humidity....ummm what?  We had a great time visiting family, riding rollercoasters at Cedar Point, and checking out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.  When I get more time, I will post some great pictures of the adventures that we had!  Unfortunately, the day I came home, I got a summer flu!!!  Who gets a fever in the Summer?  I do!  Super sick for 5 days! Whaaaaa!

Last weekend was filled with friends and fun as we camped at Silver Lake in Maple Falls.  What a weekend to go camping!  High 80's and sunny!  The kids spend almost every waking hour in the lake.  Here is an art journaling page I made last night of all of us.  There was a GIGANTIC SWAN FLOATY  that showed up at the lake.  It wasn't mine, but I sure wished it was, so I thought I would draw myself on it and play make-believe!  After camping with friends, we drove to Artist Point on Mount Baker.  Can you believe it was filled with snow?  Such a weird sensation to walk around in flip flops in the snow on an 89 degree day!  So weird!

This week I am gearing up for the Friday Harbor Summer Arts Fair on San Juan Island.  It runs Saturday and Sunday 10-5 at the courthouse lawn.  Hope to see you there! Just look for my Carla's Funky Art Booth, Dan and I will be the ones eating Chicken Gorgonzola Salad from Road Riggers.  I HAVE MISSED IT SO MUCH!

Also, if you haven't gotten a chance yet, I have art for sale and hanging in our Anacortes Starbucks, swing by and check it out! (sorry about the blurry picture of Ally, I drank WAY TO MUCH COFFEE before taking the photo! :)

A Very Special Saturday.

Art Journaling, RunningcarlaComment

Had one of the best Saturdays ever.  You know, the kind where everything in the universe goes right and you think to yourself.....wow...I will never forget this day.  That is how I felt about Saturday June 21st.  Most of you know that I have been battling a tendonitis injury from last summers marathon training.  Finally was able to start running a few weeks ago.  I decided at the last minute to sign up for a half marathon because why not right?  Ha! Ha!  Dan and I did not train for it, we were totally not in shape to do it, but who cares, you only live once!

I signed us up for Berry Dairy Days in Burlington.  It is a flat scenic course on the levy that runs next to the Skagit river.  We did this race last year and swore we would never do it again.  The gravel road is full of large rocks and will begin hurting your feet around mile 8.  With that being said, I cannot believe that I am about to tell you that this was the most enjoyable half marathon that I have ever run.  No timers, no watch, no worrying about a PR....just Dan and I out on the road solving all of the worlds problems.  So fun.  I remember every mile, taking it all in and being so grateful that I was out on the road again.  I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever, take that for granted.  This last year has been incredibly hard for me emotionally and physically.  So happy to be back at it again.

Dan has been so supportive though this whole thing.  He stopped running when I got hurt because he knew how hard it was for me. I really appreciated it.  I don't think I could bare watching him run all the time while I had to sit it out.  I was so happy to have him right there with me this weekend by my side. Love that guy!

saturday

We came in 10 minutes past our average since we went slow, but I am so glad we finished with no injuries!

After the race we walked over to The Train Wreck and had a beer and a breakfast burrito.  As Dan says "I don't always drink beer in the morning, but when I do, it is after I have run a half marathon"....ha! ha!

saturday1

I wish I could tell you that I came home and took a nap but the truth is, I had a little fitbit addiction episode.  I realized that it was 10:00 a.m. and I had already gone 25,000 steps. (the most I had ever gotten in a day....) That is a TON OF STEPS...so.....Why not see if I could do 40,000 in a day??? I walked.....and walked......and walked.....and then walked some more until I made it to 20 miles in a day!!!!  Yay ME!!!

saturday2

Now I can say that I have walked 40,000 steps in a day, wooohoooo! (Yes, I know there is something wrong with me...)  Dan threated to take my fitbit away again!

After my 20 mile day, I took a some time to rest and  colored in my art journal:

saturday3

I am grateful.  Grateful to have this smiling happy man in my life.....grateful I can get out of bed each day....grateful I can run again...

(please ignore laundry pile on the top of the couch....it got put away....eventually I think)

What are you grateful for?

Goooooo MARINERS!!!

Art Journaling, Family, Travelcarla

Yay! Had a blast last weekend watching the Father's Day Mariners Game!  It has been years since I have been to Safeco Field.  The best part was that we were able to meet with my Ohio cousins!  They were visiting Seattle for a few days and got together to watch the game!  Gooooooo Mariners!  Great game and we even WON!!!!

mariners3mariners2mariners1

We had some nose bleed seats but still had a great view!

I did find time to do a little art journaling at the end of the weekend.

Oh, and did I mention THAT I MADE MY LAST LUNCH FOR THE KIDS TODAY!!!!!!  I am so sick of packing them lunches I could puke!  Here is the bagel I carved this morning.  So over it!

Weekends are Flying Fast!

Art Journaling, Farmers Market, Paintingcarla

Holy Smokers.....the weekends are flying by like a whirlwind!  Last weekend was so crammed, I can't believe we made it through!  We started off the weekend with the Fish Show here in Anacortes.  I could not believe how many people were out and about for First Friday Art Walk, YAY!  Swarms of people everywhere!  So amazing to see people supporting local art! I paid Ally to be my date for the night..(which she did for 5 minutes and then ended up ditching me for friends)...here we are loving my mermaid painting, ha! ha!

weekend1

After checking out the Fish Show, I did hit several studio's to check out some other local artists.  KP Studio's had the high school student show for spring.  My daughter's friend Breanna Blakely made this amazing sculpture!  I told Ally to make sure to stay friends with her so we can have her autograph things when she is famous! Go Breanna!!! :)

weekend7

On Saturday, I spent most of the day at the market by myself. :(  This is pretty unusual because Dan is almost always with me.  He was suffering from "Pain in the Ass" syndrome.  Literally!  He fell on his tailbone a few weeks ago at Absolute Air, a trampoline park in Arlington.  He was trying to be all "hip and cool" and showed the kids how to do a double back flip jumpy thing, but things went horribly awry. Instead of landing on his feet....he landed...well.....on his butt with his legs in the air............ON THE METAL BAR that had maybe a centimeter of padding!!!!  AGH!!!!  He bruised his Coccyx and is having a REALLY HARD TIME (snicker, snicker).  Instead of sharing a picture of his butt, I will spare you and provide this photo of my booth at the market... (you owe me)

weekend

After the market, I dropped off Ally at the Catapult Fest, a music concert at the Port Warehouse.  I was suppose to go and watch her friend Pearl Tottenham open for the show but I ended up giving up my tickets to my daughter's friends. (that is whole other story, but I can tell you I got the better end of the bargain.)  Pearl and Ally have been friends for a long time.  I can remember when Pearl would be belting out of tune songs in the car in grade school!  So amazing that she was able to preform at the concert, and pretty bummed that I missed it! Here is a flyer that I found in town:

weekend8

Sunday was cleaning out the garage day, which was much needed!  We now can park in there AND open our car doors!  YAY US!

I did get a few hours of down time and was able to get some art journaling in...here are couple of pages:

P.s. My brother Clayton really did graduate Valdictorian....and I hate him for being such a SMARTYPANTS!!!!!!  No fair!!!!  How come I have to the be the flighty air-head artist one???

Hope you guys all had a great weekend too!  We are gearing up for another crazy weekend ahead....only this time??? Seattle, visit with out-of-state relatives, a market and TWO BIRTHDAYS!!!!  AGH!!!!  Stay tuned, I am slowing going out of my mind, so the next blog post should be interesting!!! :)

Adventures with my fitbit...... :)

Art Journaling, Dieting, Me, Runningcarla1 Comment

It is confession time.  Sit down, hold on, here we go....  "Hi my name is Carla and I am addicted to my fitbit" (ok, I know I have already told you this before, but now we are on a whole new level) What is a fitbit you ask?  Oh, just this silly wristband pedometer  I wear that has totally TAKEN OVER MY LIFE!  This my second attempt with the fitbit, the first go-around, I had it taken away from me because I was obsessing and hurting myself.

Let us travel back a few months to the holidays.  Dan bought me a fitbit for a Christmas present.  I fell head over heels in love with it!  I programmed it into my IPhone and it tracks everything I do!  It monitors my steps, calories in and calories out, how well I am sleeping, and even how many pounds I need to lose!  It was love at first site!

fitbitI didn't care for the color at first, I am more of a hot pink girl, but it grew on me and now I love that fact that it blends in with most of my outfits!  So anyways, lets get back to why I had my fitbit taken away the first time.  If you remember a while back, I was injured training for a marathon last summer and was not suppose to be on my feet very much.  It was a tendonitis injury so the more repetition the worse it would get.  Needless to say, as soon as I received my new Christmas present, off I went.  I was walking 5 miles a day, tracking calories and lost 6 pounds pretty quickly.....all was going well...until....OUCH!!!! My leg started flaring up again.  Dan then proceeded to take my gift away and hide it in the closet until I became injury free!

It has now been a few months and he told me I am allowed to try it again, as long as I don't obsess about it.  (which I still do, muahahahahaha!) One of my favorite things about this pedometer that you can become "fitbit friends" with someone and track their steps too!  For example, my friend Scott, who thinks is super awesome....(which he isn't by the way) makes fun of me when he notices I haven't walked very much on a certain day.  He is one of those guys who is on his feet all day (pretending to work) so he easily gets his 10,000 steps in....and then some.  My goal is to kick his booty all the way to China!  This week is THE WEEK I think I can actually WIN! I am already ahead of him!  YAY ME!

fitbit6

I haven't been doing well at tracking calories...due to the sheer fact that I am lazy; AND............. I do not want to be held accountable for the potato salad that I just shoved into my mouth.  Mmmm.....burp, that was delish......

The fitbit makes exercise fun and has gotten my big old booty off the couch and back exercising again.  If you don't have one, I really encourage you to go out and purchase one.  They have many different makes and models; prices vary depending on what you are looking for.  If you are a game player or enjoy little challenges like me, this gadget it for you!  I happen to have the flex, which is the wristband.  I would be cautious when purchasing a fitbit "One," I have seen these out on the road or trails when they have fallen off while running.

Here are a couple shots of my morning walk (these morning walks are my secret enemy attacks against Scott...he is going down this week for sure!).....I sure do love where I live.  Thank you Anacortes for being so hip and beautiful.....

fitbit2fitbit4fitbitbikefitbit3As you can see, I live in one of the coolest places in the world!!  So grateful that I live here!!!  Well, I am off to get more steps in before Scott catches up with me!  Oh and did I mention????  I am back running again....trying not to over-do it but I did run this the other day:

5milesHappy Tuesday!

A PEEK into my Art Journal

Art Journalingcarla1 Comment

delishI thought I would share with you a few art journaling pages this week.  There is something so relaxing to me about drawing and painting on the couch in the evening.  I use my journal to unwind from a long day. I tend to have different journals for different things.  My favorite type of journaling is documenting things that our happening in our life.  The kids love to look back through the journals, it is a illustrated story of their lives.  Journaling lately has been few and far between.  I have filled up my free nights with learning how to crochet.  I am currently making a granny square blanket (that will be done when I am a granny.)  It is taken me forever and I have given up on the thought that it will finished anytime soon. It seems lately I am journaling to practice objects.  More like small mini scenes and paintings.  Over the years my supplies have changed, I began journaling with moleskine journals and Prismacolor pencils.  Currently I am LOVING my Moleskine Watercolor Large Journal.  I also use a traveling watercolor kit and Micron Pen.

Here are a few pages:

The Biggest Loser Challenge!

Art Journaling, DietingcarlaComment

Well, if you are fortunate enough to know Dan and I, you will know just how competitive we are with each other!!!! Ha! Ha!  I think that is one of the things I love the most about him.  In all honesty, we truly make such a GREAT TEAM!  We are very supportive, and motivate each other.  Every year we do the same old thing.  Lose weight, and then comes the dreaded holidays where we PACK IT ON!  Cookies, cakes, dinner parties, drinks, egg-nog lattes, and so on.....

We decided this January to do a Biggest Loser Challenge, and it has been SO FUN!  Every Friday we weigh-in, and have been going by "percentage of weight lost".....sometimes I win that week, and sometimes he does.  Whoever loses for the week has to pay $20.00 into the "pot".  (Shhhhh......but I think Dan has paid-in way more than I have, hee! hee!)  Whoever wins on May 1st gets to decide on how we are going to use that money on our secret family vacation!!!!  YEAH!  So it truly is a win-win for everybody.

I always forget how time consuming it is to find the time to exercise everyday.  Sounds silly huh?  It seems like between going to work at my "real job", painting, taking care of the kiddies, and cooking......there really isn't a lot of time in the day.  I have been making sure to take an hour to work-out 6 days a week, and that folks, TAKES TIME!!!!  6 days a week you ask????  Oh ya baby, this girl is going to win!

My new secret weapon that I am going to use next is.......  my new "Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred" DVD!!!!  This is going to make me WIN THIS CHALLENGE FOR SURE!  This is a 20 minute HELL work-out. Excuse my French, but this BABY IS HARD!  I totally thought I was in shape....I have been running 4-5 miles a day, but this work-out is a KILLER.  It basically is a circuit training quick video that combines weights, cardio and abs.  I have done it twice now, and can barely type this blog post.  I AM SO SORE!

I am down to my last 5 pounds, let's see if I can SHRED it OFF!!!!!  All in all, this challenge has been so great for Dan and I.  We are having fun, eating clean and healthy, and saving some cash!!!!  Speaking of clean eating.  I have banned myself from watching anymore food documentaries!  It is disgusting what the government does to our food.  I now run around preaching to everyone to eat organic, no processed, no GMO foods.  I am starting to sound like my uncle Petey.  Who is uncle Petey??  Well, he use to be my uncle, then people got divorced, and blah, blah, blah.....but still feels like my uncle.....and long story short, he is always posting horrible things on what we should and shouldn't eat on Facebook.

I really hope we make it to our goal weight.  We are both stuck at a plateau right now, and it is frustrating.  Working so hard all week, and the scale refused to move.  I keep thinking in my head, WE CAN DO THIS! WE CAN DO THIS!  I posted some pictures below of our challenge.....Dan doesn't know I posted his weight....but he never reads my blog posts, so shhhhhh.....don't tell!  I don't care if the whole world knows how fat or skinny I am, I think people shouldn't care about telling their weight at all.  Large or small, we are who we are, so who cares anyways!.....I also added a couple of sketches from my watercolor journal.

Wish us luck....two more months to go!

Here is our weigh-in chalkboard, did you notice this week? Nothing is moving.

Where we started. Ha! Ha!

Yeah!!!! A Three, a three!!!! Back down into the 130's! PHEW!!!!

A picture of my secret weapon.....muahahahahaha!

Oooooooo ya baby!!!!! Feeling good, and gonna get BUFF!!!!!! :) Bring it on SEATON!

Happy Saturday!!!!

Random Nothingness......and other such non-sense.

Art Journaling, Familycarla1 Comment

Well folks.  I got nothin'.  Well nothin' good to blog anyways.  This has been heavy on my mind lately.  I mean.....there has been NOTHING happening around here.  Let me reflect on the past few weeks.  We have not done much, that is for sure.  I did finally get the studio cleaned up.  That is pretty much it.  I have been currently working on two commissioned pieces for a family.  It is of their cat and dog.  They are turning out really cute, I will have to share them with you when I get them done.

The only exciting thing that has happened this last month is the "Mysterious Missing Recycling Can Mystery".....that was pretty exciting for about three weeks.  To make a long story short, our recycling can disappeared.  We spent weeks calling the company begging for a new can....and every week they said they would deliver one.  Finally after the third week we started getting grouchy.  After a long investigation we learned that they had delivered three cans to our address and the neighbor had them stacked up on the side of his house???  Weird.  Well needless to say, we won't have that problem again....I went "Ghetto Daisy Style" on our can:

Oh ya baby!!! Just try to steal that!!! Ha! Ha!

Another thing I have been obsessed about has been my watercolor journal.  I have been loving it!!!! :) I ordered a traveling watercolor set, and have enjoyed the portable water color brush.  I try to do 2 to 3 pages a week about what is going on with our family.  It has been hilarious.  I hope that one day the kids will look back through it and remember some of the great times we have had!  Here is a quick page I did back during the holidays:

Hmmm.....what else is going on around here?  Oh ya, Dan and I are still doing the Biggest Loser Challenge.  So far I am in the lead, I won 3 weeks and he has one two.  On a good note, we are both losing weight!  Yahooo!  I lost 7 pounds and he has lost 6.  We had a minor set back when the treadmill broke.  After whining about it, we decided that our fat butts better take some action and we bought a new one!!!  I have only been able to walk on it so far, due to my pain in the butt, literally!  I have been fighting piriformis syndrom.  This has been an off and on running injury that I have been fighting for years.  I just graduated from physical therapy, and it looks like I be able to get back running again as early as next week!  Yahoo!

Came across this picture tonight, looking for random nothingness to blog about.  Dan and Orion fishing under the moonlight.   I can't wait for summer nights at the beach cabin again.  It just can't get here fast enough.

Well, that is it for now peeps.  I promise my next post will be way more exciting, and I promise to blog more!!!! :) Thanks for readin'.....

Happy Monday!

The Whimsey of Women Art Show

Art Journaling, PaintingcarlaComment

WOW, now this is a little embarrassing. I haven't posted in almost a month. Yikes.  I do have a couple of GREAT excuses.  For starters, I found my watercolor art journal, and I CANNOT stop journaling.  Every night I sit down and go crazy at the kitchen table, I am obsessed!  Second, Dan and I started a "Biggest Loser Challenge" and I have been working my butt off (literally) ever since! :)

This next weekend is The Whimsey of Women Art Show at the Depot.

I have been gearing up for a whimsical show.  I have done an Anacortes series through my eyes. :)  All colorful and funky! Here are a few recent pieces:

Ahhhh....the "Gere-a-Deli" statue!  Every Thursday I am fortunate enough to eat lunch at an AMAZING hip restaraunt!  The little copper guy in the painting above is there to greet you at the door on your way in.  The first time I laid eyes on him, I knew I had to do a silly fun bright painting, he is SO COOL!   Gere-a-Deli is the BEST place in Anacortes for sandwiches, soup and salads!  It is always packed, no matter what time you show up.  If you are ever in the area, you MUST swing by and grab a bite, you will love it.....

Another piece I have been working on is the Anacortes oil refinery.  I have heard so many negative comments about how ugly or smelly the refinery is.  I think it is beautiful.  :)  Have you ever driven my the refinery at night?  It looks like a little city and all the lights sparkle off the water.  The refinery is such a big part of Anacortes, it keeps people employed and the city alive.  I don't even mind the stinky smell it gives off.....(ok, sometimes I do, I admit it.)

Here is my refinery:

The picture is horribly blurry, I think I better start taking some photography classes! Whaaaa!

Hope to see you this weekend at THE DEPOT!

Been having a blast with my Moleskine Art Journal!  Here are some recent entires.....just thought I would share.  I encourage all of you to do some type of journal.  It is so wonderful to go back and look through them and remember parts of you life you may have forgotten.  I have my great grandfather's diaries that I look through every so often, it is AMAZING!  The type of life that he had, things that were important to him, even the daily weather!

Now....get off the computer and get JOURNALING! :)

Moleskine Watercolor Book!

Finally, finally, finally, finally got my new Moleskine Watercolor Journal the other day.  I have always been fascinated by watercolors, but I totally can't paint with them!  I thought this would  be a good way to practice.  I have kept art journals for years, and Moleskine is my favorite!  Here are some pages I have done so far.  The second one is a bit blurry, sorry! :)

Here are my 2012 resolutions!

Dan and I have been workin' out!  For a real treat, you can check out OUR FAVORITE WORKOUT SONG EVER!!!!!!!!!!

Create a journal!

Art Journaling, Mixed Mediacarla2 Comments

I have had a journal for as long as I can remember.  It is such a great way to sit down, relax, and get some creativity flowing!  You should give it a shot!  The best part about journaling is when you get a chance to go back and skim through it years later!  It is another great way to keep memories.  Everyone creates journals differently.  I personally like the large Moleskine Sketchbooks, Prismacolor pencils and ink!  I tend to fill the whole page with pretty colors and funny drawings.  Sometimes I write things about what we did that day (to help me remember in the future), poems, or a funny story.  The Creative Journal, The Art of Finding Yourself by Lucia Capacchione is a great book to help you get going.  (Sometimes it gets pretty in depth, and a little heavy) She proposes some fun exercises to get you started! I have a special sketchbook that tags along with me when I go on vacations.  That moleskine has been through a hurricane, the jungle, and humidity to make you choke on!  A ton of my painting inspiration comes from my journals.  If I am having "artist" block, I can sit down, look through them....and get some ideas!  The kids love to look through them as well. (my journals are goofy and funny, you might create something that is more personal, and you might not want the family pouring through them, that is ok too!)  The greatest part about journaling is YOU CAN DO IT HOWEVER YOU WANT!!!! If I don't feel like coloring and drawing, sometimes I cut something out of a magazine and glue it in, and doodle around it! Here is a few of my crazy journaling pages:
