What I really mean to say.

Family, Me, Mixed Media, Paintingcarla2 Comments

Dear Friends,

I was going to start a blog post about my new mixed media painting "Don't Quit Your Daydream".......and talk about dreams, and hopes, and love, and all kinds of inspirational things.

The truth of the matter is, I just can't do that today.

My heart is heavy.

I recently heard that my cousin was diagnosed with breast cancer.  That makes 5.  Five people I know personally (4 are under the age of 45) that have breast cancer. This is not including the other 4 people I know who have already been through it. I am scared for them, I can't stop thinking of them. I wonder what in the world is going on. Why are so many women getting this?  We don't need anymore breast cancer awareness, I think we are all quite aware.  We need more funding in breast cancer kicking ass treatment.

I cancelled my vendor booth space today at the farmers market to go to a fundraiser for one of my friends to help with medical bills.  I often wonder how I could financially make it something like that.

My thoughts today are not of inspiration and daydreams, my thoughts are with these women who have to be brave and take one day at a time.    I wish I could say something to them to make them feel better, hell....I wish I was better with saying something at all!  I am awful with words and everything comes out in a big jumbled, awkward sentence.  I am not very good with communicating with words, so perhaps that is why I paint! :)  So on that note.....I am sending positive vibes and hugs to all of you!

Love, Carla

A Summer Update

Art Journaling, Family, Me, TravelcarlaComment

Wowza!  It has been weeks without blogging!  I have taken a couple of weeks off to spend time with family and friends and now trying to get back on track.  Now, where do I start? Hmmmm....lets see. Dan, Ally and I flew back to Ohio for the 4th of July. Who knew it would be so humid?  Ha! Ha! 85 degrees, and 80% humidity....ummm what?  We had a great time visiting family, riding rollercoasters at Cedar Point, and checking out the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.  When I get more time, I will post some great pictures of the adventures that we had!  Unfortunately, the day I came home, I got a summer flu!!!  Who gets a fever in the Summer?  I do!  Super sick for 5 days! Whaaaaa!

Last weekend was filled with friends and fun as we camped at Silver Lake in Maple Falls.  What a weekend to go camping!  High 80's and sunny!  The kids spend almost every waking hour in the lake.  Here is an art journaling page I made last night of all of us.  There was a GIGANTIC SWAN FLOATY  that showed up at the lake.  It wasn't mine, but I sure wished it was, so I thought I would draw myself on it and play make-believe!  After camping with friends, we drove to Artist Point on Mount Baker.  Can you believe it was filled with snow?  Such a weird sensation to walk around in flip flops in the snow on an 89 degree day!  So weird!

This week I am gearing up for the Friday Harbor Summer Arts Fair on San Juan Island.  It runs Saturday and Sunday 10-5 at the courthouse lawn.  Hope to see you there! Just look for my Carla's Funky Art Booth, Dan and I will be the ones eating Chicken Gorgonzola Salad from Road Riggers.  I HAVE MISSED IT SO MUCH!

Also, if you haven't gotten a chance yet, I have art for sale and hanging in our Anacortes Starbucks, swing by and check it out! (sorry about the blurry picture of Ally, I drank WAY TO MUCH COFFEE before taking the photo! :)

Goooooo MARINERS!!!

Art Journaling, Family, Travelcarla

Yay! Had a blast last weekend watching the Father's Day Mariners Game!  It has been years since I have been to Safeco Field.  The best part was that we were able to meet with my Ohio cousins!  They were visiting Seattle for a few days and got together to watch the game!  Gooooooo Mariners!  Great game and we even WON!!!!

We had some nose bleed seats but still had a great view!

I did find time to do a little art journaling at the end of the weekend.

mariners4 mariners5

Oh, and did I mention THAT I MADE MY LAST LUNCH FOR THE KIDS TODAY!!!!!!  I am so sick of packing them lunches I could puke!  Here is the bagel I carved this morning.  So over it!

mariners6I forgot to mention that Dan's birthday was yesterday!  Happy Birthday Danny!

Go Mariners!

Vampire Road Trip!

Family, Me, Travelcarla

Two thumbs up for Spring Break and Road Trips!!!!  Been quite a while since I have taken a few days off!  We took my daughter and her friend Breanna out to the Olympic Peninsula for a VAMPIRE ROAD TRIP!  What is a Vampire road trip you ask???  Well, long story short, Stephanie Meyer wrote a series of vampire love stories back in 2005 and she based the TWILIGHT series right out of Forks Washington.  (Did you know that Forks gets the most rain in the continental US??? ) My daughter and I read the books years ago and we thought it would be fun to take a little road trip and check out the TWILIGHT sites!

We started out crossing the ferry on Whidbey Island to Port Townsend, walked around town for a bit, then headed to FAT SMITTY's!!!!  Pretty much the best burger place in Washington.  My favorite part about this restaurant is the DOLLAR WALL.  Pretty much everyone who visits decorates a dollar and pins it to the wall.  At the end of the year, they take all the dollars and donate it to local charities, thousands and thousands of dollars!  So cool!

Sorry about the stupid blurry picture but you don't really want to know what I have been through trying to get this blog post up.  I seriously have spent over 5 hours trying to get this post up.  I hate my new computer, I hate windows 8, I have BIG, BIG, BIG REGRETS that I didn't just buy another Mac. Ugh.

Ok, moving on......we then went to Sequim and checked out Olympic Game Farm, so fun!!!!  I haven't been there in ages!  Dan and the girls had a blast feeding all the animals.  If you ever get a chance, you should go and check it out.  It was a little bit pricer than I rememeber.  For the 4 of us plus two loaves of bread it was $50.00.

After the game farm we headed West to Forks!!!!  We rented a "TWILIGHT" Room at the Pacific Inn Motel.

The next day we ventured around the rainy town to check out all the cheesy sites, so FUN!

We OF COURSE had to HAVE MATCHING SHIRTS (even Dan had to wear one)....They read "Rain, Rain Go Away I want Edward to sparkle today".....freakin' hilarious.  Guess you are going to have to read the book to know the reference! :)

I have a million more wonderful photos to share with you but I am having big problems with this blog post. I am now on my 6th hour and am finally giving up.  Hopefully I can solve this issue soon and start blogging again!!! Off to get some technical support!!!

What's New? Oh ya, that's right, the SEAHAWKS WON the SUPER BOWL!!!!

Family, Me, PaintingcarlaComment

Been pretty much forever since I have done a blog post.  I have a confession to make.  My computer is dying.  Well not actually dying, but it sure is on its last leg.  I am using a MacBook Pro that was built in 1920.  It is sooooo super old, and now has a million photos on it and runs super s--l--o--w.  So slow it makes me not even want to get on here and share things with you.  The good news is that I am actually going shopping to get a new computer this month.  I have been saving, saving, saving! Yeah me!  I wish I could buy another Mac, but it isn't in the budget this year.

Sooooo if you haven't heard already, THE SEAHAWKS WON THE SUPER BOWL!!!  What?  What?  What?  I can't believe it, soooooooooo exciting!!!!  I never thought it would happen in my lifetime!!!! Yahoooo!!!  My Facebook friends like to give me a hard time and tell me that I am not a Seahawks fan because I always complain when the games are on.  What they don't know is that I am always jealous when the Seahawks are on TV!  I am frugal and refuse to pay for cable, therefore I never GET TO SEE THE GAMES!!!!  I grew up with football always on at the house (with the VOLUME on MAX), and I truly miss it every winter!  We did get to watch the playoffs and Super Bowl this year by inviting ourselves other people's homes!!!!  Good thing I have nice friends!  (thank you Longchamps and Posts!)

My 12th man "Beast Mode" hair!!!!

I wanted something "cutesy" for the house, because some girls like pretty things...hee...hee...I painted this sign with watercolor.....

Ok, what else has been happening around here??  Let's see.....

Our friends Steve and Andy came to visit last weekend from Seattle, that was fun.   The main reason for the visit was so Andy could show off his kick-ass Camaro.  Sorry for the bad language...but when you say Camaro you kinda have to say kick-ass at the same time.  They kinda go hand in hand......

Like this: Andy's Kick-Ass Camaro.

I even got to ride in it!!!  (I kinda peed a little when we went fast, but don't tell)  We had a great day, minus the fact that Andy won $600.00 bucks at the casino while I proceeded to lose $60.00.  Hmmmm.....AND THAT is why I SHOULDN'T GAMBLE.  I am the world's BIGGEST LOSER.....(and not in the skinny way either!)

I also have been super busy with some recent commissioned pieces.  Here are some of the latest:

That pretty much sums up what I have been doing lately.  26 more days until I see the orthopedic surgeon for my running injury last summer. I can't wait!!!  I just want to get fixed and hit the pavement again. Who knows, maybe I will still be able to pull off a marathon this next summer. (wishful thinking? I think yes.)

Happy Thursday!!!

Adventures in Homebrewing......

Family, Mixed Media, PaintingcarlaComment

As some of you know, my better half likes to make beer.  Not just any beer, but the pretty much the best beer around,  or that is what I have heard anyway.  I am not to much of a beer person.....but I do like a good brew every now and then.  A few weeks ago Dan upgraded to an all grain brewing system and has been brewing up a storm. Every day when I pull into the garage I try not to cringe as I look to the right and see that he has now taken up a whole wall in the garage with homebrew equipment!  AGH! It is taking over!  Against my better judgement, I added to his homebrew supplies with a few Christmas gifts, what was I thinking?

Last week he tried using his new glass flask on the ended up boiling over all over his hand!  Who knew that homebrewing could be so dangerous? Ha! Ha! Hmmm....maybe I should have bought that Ove-Glove for his stocking?  After a trip to the doctors for some burn cream and some bandages, he is as good as new!  Well besides that peeling disgusting black and red bloody skin coming off of his hand! Yeah!

I decided to make a painting for his Homebrew Dunce Award:

Water, Malt, Hops, Yeast and Magic!!!  The recipe for a perfect homebrew!!!!!  Homebrew prints coming soon to my ETSY shop!

On a side note...what about those Seahawks???  They are going all the way baby!!!!!  Here is a photo of me holding my favorite homebrew all snuggled up in Seahawks watching the game!

End of another year. Goodbye 2013, and THANKS!

Family, Me, Mixed Media, Painting, Running, TravelcarlaComment

Well here we are again.  The end of yet another year.  I really have mixed emotions about 2013.  I have had some super highs and all times lows. The first thing I want to say is THANKS!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!  Thank you for supporting and being interested in my EVER CHANGING art.  Without you I wouldn't be here!

My art has changed quite a bit this last year (to say the least)...and I owe it all to the awful Arts and Carafe lady who stole my painting then proceeded to teach a class on how to paint my painting.  I was so frustrated and upset that I decided to paint something so layered that nobody could copy it even if they wanted too.  This lead to some wonderful inspiration and the world of mixed media.  I have been having such a wonderful time playing around with paper, tissue, glue, paint, name it!  So fun! So I went from painting like this:

to this:

I truly love both styles.  Needless to say, I think I will always paint with over-the-top color!

Another highlight of the year was our family trip to Maui!  I never thought we would be able to take a big vacation like that with our kids, but in 2013 we pulled it off!  What a blast they had!

Yeah for boogie boarding!!!

On a bad note.....I injured my leg training for a full marathon back in July and haven't been able to run since:

I was devastated to say the least and the worst part? I have gained 12 pounds! Whaaaa! I tore my tendon and am not sure when I will be able to run again.  When I really get down in the dumps about it I try to remember how much I did accomplish before I got hurt.  I ran 18 miles without stopping. Did I mention that was WITHOUT STOPPING?  That may not seem like a big deal to you, but it sure was a big deal to me.  I never in my life thought I would be able to do something like that!  I still have a dream of doing a full marathon, and I hope someday I can accomplish it!  In the mean time Dan bought me a fitbit.  I have been walking every morning!   I just love it!  10,000 steps a day!  Woohoo!

I actually took some time this year to do a painting for myself:

This has been quite a crazy year for me emotionally.  I learned how to be brave with my art, follow my intuition and believe in myself. I pushed boundaries, dared to try new materials and really tried hard not to be embarrassed of my paintings.  (this is an ongoing issue I have with myself)  It is scary throwing yourself out there to the public.

Not to sure what next year will bring.  I am embracing 2014 and hope everyone has a wonderful New Year.

Christmas is OVER!!!

Family, Mixed Media, PaintingcarlaComment

I hate to say it, but I am so glad Christmas is over.  It was a weird one this year, and to top it off, I got sick on Christmas Day.  Now I am looking around the house wondering what the heck I am going to do with all of these Christmas decorations! :)  It seems like every year we accumulate just a little bit more!  It always is a bit overwhelming to put everything away. UGH.  Just the thought of it makes me sick again. Ha! Ha!

I wanted to share a couple of paintings that I did for my family and friends this Christmas.  I wish I had the time and resources to paint a picture for everyone, so each year I have to pick and choose.  The winners for this year were my step-dad (who has been whining for a painting for months now)....and my good/evil friend Andy who amuses me everyday with his bad attitude on social media. :)

Jerry's salmon!

Here is Andy's.  Not my style at is Pennywise from the Stephen King movie "IT" gross, and I hate this painting, to freaky.  The kids were scared of it, but Andy loved it. Puke.

Merry Christmas Austin and Al!

My favorite Christmas present was Grumpy Cat!!!  Thanks Ally!

Orion and I getting our Christmas cheer on before the Ugly Sweater Party! :)

I hope all of you enjoyed your Christmas!

Best. Cookies. Ever.

You will never believed what arrived yesterday via Washington State Ferry.  THE BEST CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!  (and no I am not kidding).  Let me give you a little back story on this.  Years ago we lived on a little tiny island that sits really close to Canada.  My daughter Ally would spend every Monday at the after school children's program at the San Juan Island Library.  The after school read aloud program pretty much went like this: a group of children would sit at a table and color while a wonderful lady named Kathy would read to them.  Kathy would set out little cups of milk and serve her AMAZING chocolate chip cookies.   I was a school bus driver at the time, and after my route was done, I would swing by the library to pick her up. Every Monday I would secretly hope that only a few students would have attended so I could eat a left over cookie!!!!!

Ok, so I am not really sure how to describe these cookies.  You might think by looking at them that they are just a simple ordinary chocolate chip cookie....but they are NOT.  They are perfectly perfect.  Not over baked on the bottom....a little crisp, but not crispy....they are buttery, chocolatey,  and so delicious!  I am pretty positive that there is secret ingredient, but I cannot figure out what it is!  Dan thinks it is because they are baked with love, and I have to agree.  Maybe love is the secret ingredient.

So, to make a long story longer....(as Dan's dad would say)...Kathy sent us over a box of chocolate chip cookies from Friday Harbor! I could not believe it!  They couldn't have come on a better day....I had a terrible day at work and came home to this beautiful cookie package!  Dan was the delivery man, and I cannot believe they made it here WITHOUT being DEVOURED!  We haven't had them in years and years, and they were EXACTLY AS WE REMEMBER THEM!

Thank you so much Kathy!  It made our Holiday Season!

Merry Christmas!

Brave Intuitive Painting......oh and Halloween.

Family, PaintingcarlaComment

Yep, I have really been changing my art work lately.  It really has been a long time coming.  I was so sick of the same ol' thing.  Painted cartoon dogs, cats, funny cows, goofy birds and blah....blah.....blah...I was just so sick of it. I was going around and around trying to figure out what to do and how to get inspired again.  That is when I decided to read Brave Intuitive Painting by Flora Bowley.  It was such an inspirational book!!!!!  Flora teaches you how to layer paint, not to be scared, follow your instincts......AND how to discover your own painting style.  I absolutely loved this book! :) She was so inspirational and is truly an amazing artist.  I feel like I have found myself again!  I have been so the issue is that I cannot stop painting!  I have redesigned the website for a whole new feel.  No more black with white writing (that drove me nuts)!  Here are a couple of my latest Flora inspired paintings:

I also have been working on a ton of mixed media paintings.  It has been so fun to just create without having to worry about the "business" side of things.  It is hard for me to think out of the box.  I never really played around with any other media because I felt like I should always just stick with paint (like there were rules or something!!!).  You should see the studio now!!!  There are papers, tissue, glue, spray paint, inks, and glitter everywhere!!! I love how messy everything is!!!  Such a wonderful environment for creativity....I love the paint and inks smeared all over my hands! :)

On another note.....we all survived Halloween here at the house!  My blog wouldn't be complete if I didn't share what the kids wore on Halloween night!

Happy Fall!!!!

Hmmmm.......this is my first blog post after changing the site and I noticed that all the photos are really small, I wonder if I screwed something up....must check this out....

Stay tuned!

Our Family Vacation!

Dan and I decided to stop ditching the kids and actually took them on vacation with us this time! :)  We surprised them with a family trip to Maui for a week!  WHAT A BLAST!

Some highlights of our trip included snorkeling with sea turtles, surfing, boogie boarding, and laying in the sun!  It was my first time to Hawaii, and I was so excited to check out the culture, the beautiful beaches and actually enjoy some warm temperatures.

Ally and I won the sand castle contest against the boys.

Dan having an affair at the Old Lahaina Luau!!! :)

Luau!Hawaiian Shave Ice (with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the bottom)....

Dan and I at the black sand beach.

Dan!!!! Photobombing my perfect picture!!!!! :)

Coconut hunting on a black sand beach!

Headed Home!

P.s. Did you know that Hawaiian Airlines serves complimentary wine????  I am ONLY going to fly with them from now on!!!

Now it is back to reality, and back to life!  Whaaaaaaa!

An 80 degree Spring?

Are you sitting down?  You might want to, I have some shocking news!  A few weeks ago we got up into the 80's here in WASHINGTON!!!!  HECK YES!   This rarely happens around here, even the dead middle summer we hardly ever see 80 degree weather.  (and please remind me again on why I live here?)

Let me let you in on a little secret.  I tend to get a little nutty about the weather when the forecast calls for sun and warm temperatures.  Just ask Dan.  I actually feel a bit sorry for him.  As soon as the forecast calls for nice weather....I am rushing around the house planning  and packing things.  All kind of things.  I bust out the swimsuits, towels, frisbees, the cooler, everything I can think of.   The whole family knows that I go into "sun mode" and they don't even dare whine or argue about anything that I come with for things to do.  When the sun is out, I make the whole family be outside for the WHOLE day....hiking, biking, trips to the beach, going to the park walking around town, and blah, blah, blah.  I don't even let them come inside to eat or brush their teeth.  I have them so well trained. :)

We decided to enjoy a Sunday beach day.  We packed up some lunches and the kids each brought a friend. The day was filled with making memories on the beach.  Digging holes, riding logs in the water, sun tanning, reading and best of all???  Eating.  It was so relaxing and fun!  I even won a "double-dog" dare and went swimming!!! (Ok, not actually swimming, but I did go all the way in!!!!  Brrr it was FREEZING!  I am very proud of myself because Dan was a little baby and stayed on the shore!)  I sure hope this is a sign to come for a warm and sunny summer.  As I look out the window right now, it is grey, raining, and miserable.  I will just keep remembering the memories of us at the beach in 85 degree weather in April!

Oh ya, and here is another thing I wanted to talk to you about!!!!  Look at my chin!!!!  All these years have gone by and NOBODY has TOLD me that I HAVE A JAY LENO CHIN???  What is up with that?  From now on, just call me "Jay".......

On another note, check out these AWESOME funky, crazy, hip, hippy, hipster, rockin' pants I found on the clearance rack at JCPENNY's the other day.  $4.00 baby!!!!  You only live once right????  I think I may wear them everyday.  Poor Dan.

Spring has Sprung - well for today anyway.....

WOW guys!  I feel like such a loser.  Haven't painted in weeks, haven't blogged.....haven't done much with Carla's Funky Art in a few months.  There has been so much going here, it isn't even funny.  My big news is the fact that we are moving in a few weeks.  Wasn't really a planned moved, but I am so excited!!  We will be living in Old Town Anacortes!  Yeah!  Both Dan and I fell in love with that part of town as soon as we moved here.   Full of historic homes, it has a quaint feel as you walk around.  Everything is in walking distance.  Just think, no more using the car!  Two thumbs up for the environment!   The kids are super stoked, but have been whining quite a bit about having to walk to school.  Needless to say, the house is full of boxes and is a complete mess.  IT is HARD moving a 4 bedroom home, we have so much random stuff.  I have gotten rid of THREE carloads to Goodwill and Salvation Army.  UGH!  My studio is packed up, and all I want to do is move, and get back to painting.  The Farmers Market is coming, and I really need to get on it!

Bare with me, I will be back!  Just life is a bit crazy right now!

On a separate note, the bright orbital sun actually shone down on Washington this weekend, it was GORGEOUS!!!!  We took a few hours off from packing and got out and enjoyed it!

Stay tuned! Once we get moved, I will be back at it!!!!

Hey, why don’t you TAKE A HIKE!!! Ok, not really. :)

Dieting, Family, Travelcarla1 Comment

Well, here we go again.  That time of year when I yearn to get outside.  I have such a hard time getting through yet another Washington winter.  You would think after all these years that I would be numb to all this rain, damp and cold, but the truth is really hard.  It takes a toll on me, and I love to get outside any chance I get.

Had a great weekend here at the house.  Got two commissioned pieces done that I will share with you tomorrow.  Orion had his friend Logan over for a "stay the night"....what a blast they had. XBOX PARTY ALL NIGHT LONG!!!  I have never seen two boys eat so much in my life.  When I say eat, I mean EAT!!!!  I pride myself on eating organic healthy food here at the house, and I am ashamed at what I let them consume. Here is small fraction of what went down here at the house in the last 24 hours: Little Caesars Pizza washed down with Pepsi, followed by.....Klondike Bars for dessert!!!! The next day they ate stacks and stacks of pancakes smeared with butter, syrup, and BACON!!! (every thing is better with bacon!!!) Lunch was served out of the box by an arch nemesis named KRAFT......yep, you guessed it.....MAC AND CHEESE!!!!! GROSS!!!  After all this processed guilt I figured I better get the boys outside and exercising!  We headed for the lake and got our hiking on!   We tried to ignored the rain and trudged on......

The boys at the start of the hike........

Logan and I made it to the top of the huge rock!  Hey, how do you like that AWESOME Sock Monkey hat???? Cool, I know!!!!! :)

Proof that Dan and I actually did take the kids hiking and didn't just dump them off in the forest for an hour!!!!

Almost to the end of the lake!

Instead of "Boyz in da Hood"......I will call them "Boyz on da Rock!" " :)

After we got done with our 3 mile hike Dan and I treated them to yet another junk food.  What can I say, I am such a sucker!!!!  We headed to TOPPINGS, the new frozen yogurt place here in Anacortes!!!!  All in all, it was a FANTASTIC day!  We got outside, had a blast, and burned some calories!!!

Speaking of calories.....Dan and I have almost lost 10 pounds EACH since the holidays!!!! Oh yeah baby!!!!!  Take a good look now because we might shrink away!

Happy Sunday!

Random Nothingness......and other such non-sense.

Art Journaling, Familycarla1 Comment

Well folks.  I got nothin'.  Well nothin' good to blog anyways.  This has been heavy on my mind lately.  I mean.....there has been NOTHING happening around here.  Let me reflect on the past few weeks.  We have not done much, that is for sure.  I did finally get the studio cleaned up.  That is pretty much it.  I have been currently working on two commissioned pieces for a family.  It is of their cat and dog.  They are turning out really cute, I will have to share them with you when I get them done.

The only exciting thing that has happened this last month is the "Mysterious Missing Recycling Can Mystery".....that was pretty exciting for about three weeks.  To make a long story short, our recycling can disappeared.  We spent weeks calling the company begging for a new can....and every week they said they would deliver one.  Finally after the third week we started getting grouchy.  After a long investigation we learned that they had delivered three cans to our address and the neighbor had them stacked up on the side of his house???  Weird.  Well needless to say, we won't have that problem again....I went "Ghetto Daisy Style" on our can:

Oh ya baby!!! Just try to steal that!!! Ha! Ha!

Another thing I have been obsessed about has been my watercolor journal.  I have been loving it!!!! :) I ordered a traveling watercolor set, and have enjoyed the portable water color brush.  I try to do 2 to 3 pages a week about what is going on with our family.  It has been hilarious.  I hope that one day the kids will look back through it and remember some of the great times we have had!  Here is a quick page I did back during the holidays:

Hmmm.....what else is going on around here?  Oh ya, Dan and I are still doing the Biggest Loser Challenge.  So far I am in the lead, I won 3 weeks and he has one two.  On a good note, we are both losing weight!  Yahooo!  I lost 7 pounds and he has lost 6.  We had a minor set back when the treadmill broke.  After whining about it, we decided that our fat butts better take some action and we bought a new one!!!  I have only been able to walk on it so far, due to my pain in the butt, literally!  I have been fighting piriformis syndrom.  This has been an off and on running injury that I have been fighting for years.  I just graduated from physical therapy, and it looks like I be able to get back running again as early as next week!  Yahoo!

Came across this picture tonight, looking for random nothingness to blog about.  Dan and Orion fishing under the moonlight.   I can't wait for summer nights at the beach cabin again.  It just can't get here fast enough.

Well, that is it for now peeps.  I promise my next post will be way more exciting, and I promise to blog more!!!! :) Thanks for readin'.....

Happy Monday!

Happy Holidays!

Hope you all had a WONDERFUL holiday this year!  We have been so busy lately, haven't had a lot of time to blog or paint, but thought I would drop you a quick note to say SEASONS GREETINGS!  What a year it has been!  Christmas was great, one of the laziest ones yet.  Laid around all day in my NEW PAJAMA JEANS!!! Whoop! Whoop! I thought we would change it up this year and on Christmas Eve we decided to "flock" our friends.  We bought a bunch of plastic pink flamingos, decorated them....attached a little poem, and even added some homebrews to the legs!  We spent most of the night driving around,  and sneaking into friend's yards (and hoping we wouldn't get shot!).  We were caught at my friend Keri's house, but 1 out of 8 isn't bad! I think Dan and I should become professional criminals.....we are sooooo sneaky!

Looking forward to the new year, bring on 2013!  Just kinda want to get New Year's Eve over with so we can move on.  Not a huge fan of staying up until 12. (I am almost always asleep by 8:30 p.m.).....I tend to be a night owl loser.

Here are a few shots of our Christmas! Hope yours was great too!

Yahoooo for Christmas!

P.s. I am thinking of moving this blog over to blogger.  What are your thoughts on this?  I hate the white words on the black background, and think it is hard to read. Since I am a Wordpress loser, I cannot figure out how to change the background for my blog on this website.  Your feedback would be great, leave me a comment! PLEASE!

The Lights of Christmas – Warm Beach

Family, TravelcarlaComment

YEAH!  Christmas is coming! Christmas is coming!  What a great weekend we had! After a night of Christmas lights and then having Christmas "throw-up" in our house.....we are all totally in the Christmas mood! (Well, all of us besides just can't take the Grinch out of him!)  We started off by heading to Warm Beach to see "The Lights of Christmas!".   It was about a 50 minute drive south from here in Stanwood.  This was our first time checking out what they had to offer.  We usually head to Zoolights in Tacoma at the Point Defiance Zoo.  The first thing I should have realized is that we probably shouldn't have gone on the busiest day of the week.  Saturday night was PACKED with people.  Big crowds and LONG lines.  All in all, we decided to quit whining and enjoy our lighted adventure. We started off by grabbing some warm, right out of the oven DOUGHNUTS!!!! Delish!    We wandered through a million lights.  Like I said, the lines we super long.....we waited forever to be able to chat with "Bruce the Spruce" the talking tree.  It was so hilarious!  Orion was totally freaked out and tried to split several times.  :)  Ally was so "over it".....I think the kids thought we were crazy.  Several tents had holiday ornament making, so the kids made a few....we gathered around the campfire and listened to carols.  The highlight of the night for Ally and I was checking out the petting zoo.  Lots of sheeps and little tiny goats!  We skipped the "Polar Bear Express Train" due to the long lines, and topped off the night listening to the Seattle Girl's Choir.  Warm Beach had a great lighted festival, but not to sure I would go back again next year. Me being my frugal self thought the prices were ridiculous.  Tickets were expensive, you had to buy all the activities.  We could have gone to the zoo for half the price and wouldn't have had to deal with the large crowds. Sunday we got our "Christmas On" here at the house. We blasted Christmas music......baked our favorite cookies....the Hershey Kiss kind. (You know the ones....the kiss smashed on top of the peanut butter cookie!)....and wrapped presents!  Dan pouted on the couch and TRIED to play computer poker on Facebook.....but he eventually gave in! I even heard him hum a Christmas tune!  YAHOOO! I gave several hints about how great the holiday would be if we only had a pug!  Maybe I will even get my pug puppy this year!

Ally and the snowman! Notice anything different about Al??? She is a BRACE FACE!

WOW, now this a picture. Why do the kids look like they want to crawl in a hole and die? :)

Ooooo.....Ahhhhh.....reminds me of the 4th of July!

The boys!

"Bruce the Spruce" the talking tree...(and Orion freaking out! Ha! Ha!)

Save your Drama for your Llama!

Happy Holidays!!!! :)

Pumpkins and Latte’s……

Family, Travelcarla

Had an awesome family day today out at Schuh Farms in Mount Vernon!  I decided to take a break from painting, get outside and take the kids to the pumpkin patch.  I have to admit I was a bit surprised that they even wanted to venture out.  Every year I think it is going to be our last.......these early preteen and teenagers tend to not want to hang with the folks as much as they use too!  When we asked them this morning about going, they jumped up, got ready, and were out the door!!!!  YEAH!!!!  They still want to hang with us old folks!  Maybe we are cooler than we think! (yeah right) The weather here has been a bit ominous.  We have had everything from water funnel clouds, hail the size of small golf balls, rain, wind, and even some sun accompanied by a rainbow.  The deal for the day was that we would decide at 1:00.  If it was not raining we would head to pumpkin patch, if it was raining, we would do some family bowling.  I was bound and determined to do something fun with them today!  The patch won today (which was a little bit of a disappointment for Orion who loves to bowl).....and off we went!

We have been to several pumpkin farms the past few years, and I have to say the SCHUH FARMS was BY FAR the best!  They had a great shuttle service,  friendly help, and very affordable prices. We started out by finding all the clues in the corn maze. (a task that we could not pull off last year.) This was the most expensive part of our day, it cost us $20.00 for a family of 4 to wander through.  We really tried hard to ditch the kids, but they are like boomerangs, and always found there way back.  We were able to check out some baby pigs, baby cows and feed some chickens.  We swung by the latte stand (which was the highlight of my trip) grabbed some hot chocolates for the kids while I guzzled a Pumpkin Spiced Latte.  Dan cried and whined because I wouldn't let him buy a pumpkin cookie.   Our last event was grabbing some wheelbarrows, heading out through the apple orchard to find the perfect pumpkin!  We got a bit carried away, and came back with about 100 pounds of solid squash!  I tried to pick the most screwed up crazy pumpkin I could find.  Mine was long and narrow.....and I think I will carve it sideways. :)

We finished the afternoon by heading home to Anacortes and swinging by "Toppings".....the new frozen yogurt restaurant in town.  After eating about a pound of solid sweets, we all had a smile on our face as we went home.  Thank you Washington for letting us have this great family day, with no rain!  Here are some photos of our day:

Ally’s Birthday = 14 Years of Large Butt.

Hip-hip-hooray, today is my daughter's BIRTHDAY!  I know the image above is a blurred out awful mess, but I only have a few of these old polaroids from when she was born.  14 years ago, I had a little 2 pound 1 oz. girl!  My how time flies!  She was considered a little miracle baby over at Tacoma General/Mary Bridge Children's Hospital.  Being born so tiny, then losing weight, she dropped down to 1 pound 6 oz for awhile, and spent 4 months in the hospital.  I heard stories of how she may have severe brain damage, to expect learning disablities, and she could be sick all the time.  Don't get me wrong the first few years were hard, in and out of the hospital.....and constant breathing issues.  Well it is 14 years later, and you would never know she was such a tiny baby!  Little miss "Straight A" seems to be the healthiest one in the house, and tries to rule the roost by bossing us around like a typical teenager!  So thankful for modern medicine all all those wonderful, talented, and caring people at Tacoma General Hospital.

It has been really hard for me the past 14 years.  Not only was my daughter sick all the time, but I noticed a large abscessed tumor (another word that I like to call my butt)....starting to grow on my backside.  The worst part is, I can't even technically blame my daughter for my large butt because she only weighed 2 pounds when she was born. UGH!  For the last 14 years I have been battling my large butt syndrome.  It pretty much goes like this.....gain 5 pounds of butt fat.....start cutting calories, running, walking etc. Lose the weight, then gain it right back again. Awesome. Instead of constantly buying new clothes, I have two sets of them. Big butt pants, and little butt pants, and I go back and forth, back and forth. On that note:

I made a self portrait this week of me on the beach.  What do you think?

I am doing a "Caption Contest" on my Facebook page for the funniest original title.  The winner gets a free matted Puking Santa print. Swing by and cast your vote!  Judging is at 7 p.m. Friday Dan Seaton.  It is going to be a hard one to pick....people have come up with some AWESOME titles already!!!!

Happy Wednesday!

P.s. After this, I promise I will not talk or complain about large butt.  :)

Phone Book Dress!

Almost forgot to share this with you!  Last month my daughter Ally spent about 20 hours designing a San Juan Island Phone Book Dress!!!!  Why would she do this?  For the "Trashion Fashion" Show at the San Juan County Fair! Last year she took first place with her duct tape dress, so she thought she should really step it up with the phone book!

It seriously took hours and hours (with the help of Dan and I folding page after page of yellow pages).  At one point I wasn't sure if she was going to pull it off!!!!  It is always amazing to me how creative kids can be.  She didn't win first prize this year, but I think she did a great job!  Here was her dress in progress:

Lots and lots of FOLDING!!! :)

Lots and Lots of TAPE!

Oooooo-la-la!  Phone Book SHOES!

Almost done!

TA-DA!!!! Done!

****I did actually take a better picture of this with the shoes and bow, but it turned out way to dark. Ugh.

All in all, I think it turned out fantastic and I am so proud of her!  Wonder what she is going to come up with for next year?
